Why does a male praying mantis bite off the head of its mate when mating in most cases?

The female bites the head off the male. The brain of the male is essentially three ganglia, two of which are in the head. The one that is left is the only part needed for mating. This keeps the male's mind on the business of mating. Then he dies.

Aren't you glad you're not a praying mantis? Why does a male praying mantis bite off the head of its mate when mating in most cases?
Actually, it is the female who eats the male often while still mating or shortly therafter. We're not absolutely sure why this happens, however.

Some theories are that the female needs the extra nurioushment in order to begin laying eggs, or to keep the male population diverse in order to breed more variation into the species. Why does a male praying mantis bite off the head of its mate when mating in most cases?
that doesnt make sense.
