17 people commit suicide within a year in the same area, but none of the cases are connected, i doubt that ???

how many more suicides are they expecting before they do anything ?

in a town of 40,000, 17 have died which is 1 in every 2352, if that was the same ratio in london that would be 2975 in the same period, would that go unnoticed ?17 people commit suicide within a year in the same area, but none of the cases are connected, i doubt that ???
Well... what do you expect? Being young is rubbish. You have a 30hour job which you can't change, no money, no car, you can't drink, no house and you're not allowed to date whoever you want and no one pays attention to a thing you say just because you're young.

Then you finish your 11year sentence and what then? I got my A star... what now? Bam, you're behind the counter at Maccy D.

A lot of kids are starting to realise that there's little to work towards. If you want to stop them burning cars and slashing their wrists, then sort this country out for all of us.17 people commit suicide within a year in the same area, but none of the cases are connected, i doubt that ???
There's absolutely nothing to connect these cases, apart from location - one girl was on the news, saying she thought suicide was ';cool';.....how the hell do you fight that sort of mentality?
I think the cases are connected.
How right you are.

It seems almost imposable to me that in some way these tragic deaths are not linked in some way.

To be honest I find the whole thing a little spooky.
I doubt if they are unconnected. It is just that perhaps nobody has found the link yet! or we have not been told. There is at the moment a geographical link so thats a start.

It could be a genetic link, they may be unknowingly all related and perhaps prone to mental health issues.

Substance abuse could still be a link (I dont mean the usual sort of illegal drugs, but maybe a prescription drug they are getting hold of from somebody (not a doctor) for depression that is leading to catastrophic side effects. Although were they being treated by doctors for depression and the medication prescribed has had a devastating effect?

Did they go clubbing.

Although a post mortem I would have thought would have shown this.

I dont think it is a ';spooky thing'; I just think there is a communal garden link that has not been noted yet. Even if there was an internet site that they had joined, why are the suicides in/around Bridgend

Update: Just heard about the choking game.

Well, well oh dear God what is the world coming to. see link: so is this what is really happening in Bridgend. Oh dear!

I agree with Saturn five, I too find it almost impossible to believe that these tragic deaths are not linked in some way.

It's a terrible tragedy for all concerned.
I haven't read about this in any great detail but have heard bits on the news. I'm sure there is a connection, but it's probably of the ';mass hysteria'; type - after the first few, probably unconnected, suicides others who are feeling low get the idea to do the same, a sort of 'everyone else is doing it so why not me?' In some of the later cases the people might not otherwise have taken such drastic action.
I guess that it screws up the national stats on this one, and screws up the government attempts to reduce the suicide rate in young people.
Actually all the suicides have taken place in the County of Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan, not just the town as some of the press report.

So this throws your figures out a bit, but I do agree the high percentage of suicides in the geograhical area is disturbing.
I think it's the aftermath ';fame'; they receive through the media. Take away the news stories, and the suicide rate will drop.
I also agree... and yes it is a little bit spooky...

But FINALLY, they seem to be doing something. It was on the radio this morning that they are sending councillors into schools and have set up a 'crisis centre' (or something like that)... about ruddy time!
Its a bit scary all right, we have an area in our province that has a high suicide rate amongst young men and there has been no connection. It is quite possible that some are copycat suicides. My sister took her own life and this subject interests me in a way, not morbidly. I am starting a counselling course in Sept and hope to be able to help somebody in my career.
Your question is confusing the statistics. The town may have 40,000; but you haven't included the population for the surrounding parishes.

It is a horrible way to die, but young people are killing themselves every day of the week, all over the country. Perhaps the reporting stats need to be looked at. How many times were the Coroners contacted? Perhaps a reporter has asked the Coroners office to contact him/her everytime, hence lifting his/her name in the media. I don't know.
i agree...having been to bridgend myself i can see why ppl are depressed there..its an awful place..all grey and dull. i cant believe they are denying there is a connection...whatmore they are not even doing anything to stop more accuring. younge lives are being wasted. for such a small town i would have thought they would be offering support to ppl who feel depressed.
